Feeling melancholy after one of the coldest days of this season, I find myself dreaming of warmer and sunnier and luxurious surroundings. So as Willie Wonka so aptly put it, 'come with me too a land of pure imagination.' In particular, the 'Filoli Estate'. Its' been five years between visits and I am feeling nostalgic.
Filoli Estate
Just a bit of history and logistics. Located thirty miles south of San Francisco on the eastern slope of the coast, the 654 acre Filoli Estate contains its' central historic house and sixteen acres of formal garden. Filoli provides an inspiring vision of a new Eden, with bountiful land, and a plentiful of resources. The name resides in the original owner, Mr. Bourne's favorite credo: 'Fight, for a just cause; Love your fellow man; and Live a good life.'
Imagine having this view at your back door. This takes 'borrowed landscape' to a higher realm.
Close your eyes, can you smell the intoxicating aroma of sweet hyacinths?
Do you have an old bike just gathering dust balls? Make use of it on your patio as a sculpture and garden container. Brilliant!
My beautiful nieces standing next to a plaque commemorating Lurline Roth: 'Whom so loved these gardens, that in 1975, she gave them to be preserved forever for your enjoyment.' Now that is the most precious gift one gardener can give to another. And we are all richer for her gift.
Nothing says spring to me more than magnolia flowers. Oh how brilliantly white they are!
The lines of the design of this pool juxtaposed at right angles to the Historic House, is simply elegant and powerful. I have never been to Europe, but reflecting from slides, this seems to echo a European quality.
Thank you for taking this visit (if only in your imagination) with me. Remember, the hyacinths and tulips are even as we speak, growing and storing up their energy too create beautiful montages this spring.
Happy holidays and give yourself permission to daydream of warmer sites, and 'defy explananation!'
Laura :)
