Gardening is definitely a humbling experience. As much as I like to think I am in charge of how the plants ultimately behave, I have to say mother nature is always in the drivers seat. And she doesn't let you forget it. Meanwhile, I am in the backseat along for the ride. Case in point, we had a climbing hydrangea that never flowered. I was totally befuddled. This plant had partial shade and plenty of water, yet never one little bloom.
Then mother nature intervenes. A wind-storm hits and the birch tree that was shading the climbing hydrangea is blown over. Magically, the climbing hydrangea starts blooming. And whenever I can coax the deer from not eating it, this plant will bloom all summer long. Humbling, indeed.
As you gardeners know, ones' garden evolves. Part of this evolving, took for me, the direction of a 'blood-good' japanese maple creating a sizable canopy which over-shadowed our beloved clematis which bloomed so prodigiously along the the light post. I was certain it would simply leaf out without flowering. Well, mother nature once again had other plans. I was delighted to see this lovely vine climb above and nestle in the 'blood-good' japanese maple's top branches where it was able to bask at last in the sun.
There is that famous quote, "When you want to make God laugh, make a plan."
There are certainly benefits for planning out a garden, yet always remember, mother nature is bound to add her input. And this is not necessarily a bad thing.
Cheers,
Laura
