An Oasis Amidst the Bustling City

This daunting garden was borne from humble beginnings.  When a young boy learned that his mother lay near death, this young boy made a solemn promise that should she be spared, he would one day undertake a great work for the church.   This boy's mother recovered, and the future Father Mayer never forgot his solemn promise.

Father Mayer was sent from Ontario Canada to minister in the Archdiocese of Portland Oregon.  Keeping in mind his vow, the priest looked for a site to tribute Mary, the mother of Jesus.  In 1923, he finally came across some land ideal for the realization of his dream.  On May 29, 1924, the Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother was dedicated and thus Father Mayer began a great undertaking to fulfill his solemn promise.   The land which harbors over 1100 varieties of plant life spans the breadth of 62 acres.
Father Ambrose was not alone in the fulfillment of his dream.  Mr. Butchart of the 'Butchart Gardens' assisted him for 2 years and provided a plethora of ornamental plants for the garden.  There is wonderful palette of shades of greens within this oasis.
Taking the elevator up to the upper level leads to the 'meditation building' which boasts a 180 degree floor to ceiling view through to the garden, the city, and beyond.  Within this chapel is a replica of Michelangelo's 'Pieta', the original mounted in St Peter's Basilica in Rome.
This landscaped garden, allow one to escape the troubles of the city and find comfort in the lushness and serenity of nature and the gardens' design.  Regardless of ones' religious affiliations,  or age, there is a place for you here.  It is a place to return to again and again.  Thank you Father Ambrose for seeing your dream come to fruition.
An Irish Blessing for my Mom:
"May the sound of happy music
and the lilt of Irish laughter
Fill your heart with gladness
that stays forever and ever."
