I was curious about the origins of May Day. After researching this custom, I discovered that the Romans celebrated the beginning of May in honor of 'Flora', the goddess of flowers. 'Floralia', was the 5 day festivities of the this Roman goddess. The five day festivities took place from April 28 and ended on May 2. It was the Romans whom shared this celebration with the English, and gradually the rituals of the 'Floralia' were added to those of the Beltane. Fast forward to today, and today's customs on May Day are very striking similar to those of the combined traditions.
Happy May Day, and I hope you are visited by a 'Flora' giver!!![]() |
